Summary
At the beginning of this short story you are introduced to a man, Gregory, who is a salesman and takes care of his family (Mother, Father and Sister) financially. He notices some change about him as he tries to get out of bed and as it is revealed that he has transformed in a bug of some sorts, you begin to realize how unhappy Gregory was with his life. The first struggle he faces is getting out of bed. The adjustment to his new body takes longer then he expected and his family begins to worry when they realize that he had not left for work yet. Eventually he makes his way to the door and is confronted by his parents, sister and boss who all see what has become of Gregory and are terrified. He is fired from him job and is shut back in his room. For the coming months, his sister takes the responsibility of Gregory. Sooner or later his sister, Grete, realizes that Gregory is no longer her brother but is a "monster" now and she recruits her mother to help move all the furniture out of the room so that he can crawl and roam as his kind does. In this process Gregory tries to cling onto his old self as much as he can and become frightened as they move all of his furniture out of his room, including his chest and writing desk which were very important to him. Eventually Grete convinces her parents that Gregory is gone and that they need to get rid of the monster that is living in their house because she believe it is "killing" her parents. They agree but there is no need to get rid of him because Gregory dies on him own. After his death, the new family of three leave the apartment and begin to dream again of future prospects and finally start to live a new life.
Overall I thought this was a very interesting short story. I think that the point of the story was that Gregory's parents and sister were relying to much on him for financial support and he ultimately became a father figure in the house. The metamorphosis was not only one of Gregory changing from man to bug but his family learning out to live on their own and support themselves as well, which is evident in the closing paragraph. The author used great description of texture at the beginning when Gregory was realizing that he was no longer a man. I really like the authors use of time through out the story, but especially in the beginning when he is laying in bed.
